WHY WORK
You could choose a large agency with twelve departments, three account managers and a meeting to arrange the next meeting.
Or you could work directly with me while I design your website, answer messages & quietly obsess over whether that button is 2 pixels too far left.
With Me?
Who am I, then?
I’m Nigel - the person behind Aurelian Web Design. I create distinctive, professional websites for individuals and small businesses who want something that looks great, works properly and remains firmly under their control.

HOW DID I END UP HERE?
Years of project management, building things, problem-solving and getting complicated stuff over the finish line somehow led me here - designing websites, creating graphics and spending an entirely reasonable amount of time surrounded by neon sea creatures. It was not the obvious career path, but neither is most of life once you stop pretending there was a plan.

I HAVE BEEN THE CLIENT

Then I spoke to other designers
During the final couple of years of running my company, I no longer had enough time to keep improving the website myself, so I approached several designers.
Some proposals were perfectly sensible. Others came with eye-watering prices, compulsory hosting and ongoing fees for changes I might never need.
Apparently, having a website was no longer a purchase - it was a long-term custody arrangement with a direct debit attached.
I never really stopped re-building it
Over the years, that first website changed constantly. I updated the content, redesigned pages, improved the layout, replaced images and regularly decided that something needed moving three nanometres to the right for reasons nobody else would ever notice.
The website grew alongside the company because I could adapt it whenever the business changed. There was no waiting for somebody else, no invoice every time I changed a paragraph and no formal application process to replace a photograph. I simply logged in and got on with it - which, rather inconveniently for parts of the web design industry, is exactly how website ownership should work.

Your website should belong to you
Modern website systems allow me to build the site, hand it over properly and show you how to manage the everyday essentials yourself. You can update text, replace images, add pages, add blogs posts and generally get on with running your business without asking me for permission.
I remain available when you need support or would rather hand something back to me. I am not going to launch the website and vanish into the wilderness wearing a false moustache.
The aim is simple - independence when you want it and support when you need it.
I had already spent around 15 years working with IT systems, so I built it myself. It took time, trial and error and a questionable amount of tea, but eventually it worked, looked the way I wanted and - most importantly - belonged to me.
30 years on, that experience still shapes how I work. A website should support the business behind it, not become an expensive digital pet that constantly needs feeding.

When I set up my own company in 2011, I needed a professional website without a vast budget or any desire to enter into a lifelong relationship with a web designer.
